Southampton's Continued Reliance on Danny Ings Goals Highlighted by Alarming Statistic

After Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend, which featured yet another goal from Danny Ings, many have been left wondering where the Saints would be without their prolific hitman up front.

The 27-year-old has already netted twice the number of goals he did last season, with his tally for the 19/20 season currently standing at 12.

Danny Ings

That stat alone is quite remarkable, but when it comes to his importance within the Southampton squad, things start to get a little out of hand.

As noted by Opta, of the 24 goals the Saints have netted this season, Ings has managed to score 50% of them – the highest proportion of any player in the top-flight.

As a result, the striker has earned his rightful place among the big boys as he sits joint third in the Premier League’s top goalscorer charts, sitting besides the likes of Tammy Abraham and Marcus Rashford. Ings has even scored more goals than both Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling – the two players who currently run England’s attack under Gareth Southgate.

Speaking of the Three Lions, the red-hot form of the Southampton forward has allegedly peaked the interest of England's boss, prompting speculation that a call-up to the national team is in the offing.

The Englishman only has one cap for his country, which he gained in a 3-0 win over Lithuania back in 2015. When he permanently left Liverpool earlier this year, he made his intentions about representing England crystal clear – and he may just get his wishes deep into his footballing career.

Were Ings to lose his shooting boots, you do wonder where Southampton could end up this season, with few others prepared to put their hand up on a regular basis. He has scored crucial goals in wins over Watford and Norwich, also netting at the Emirates as Southampton gained a creditable draw at Arsenal.

Ings has had a string of injuries over the course of his career, so he'll be hoping, along with the club's supporters, that he stays pain free until the end of the campaign.
