Saints reserves return to winning ways

Kenwyne Jones made a welcome return to the scoresheet with a well taken goal when put through one-on-one with the keeper. The Trinidad and Tobago international had lost his way in front of goal after promising pre-season form that had made him the first choice striker at the club. Saints will be hoping that his goal will help his confidence as the club searches for the answer to our ineffective strikeforce.

Jones had incurred the manager's wrath after returning late after his country's historic qualification for the world cup and only made the bench against Hull when he may well have been due a start. He may have missed his chance to start after Ricardo Fuller's strong cameo from the bench, although to be fair, despite some excellent approach play, he didn't look like scoring.

One noticable absentee from the reserves was former Darlington man, Jason St Juste. He was brought in on the recommendation of Simon Clifford and failed even to make the bench, despite some promising outings recently in the reserves at left-back. Redknapp's comment earlier in the week that the club had no back-up for left-back Danny Higginbotham was telling about St Juste's current prospects at the club.

Another forgotten man, Leandre Griffit, scored the second thanks to a deflection on his cross. With little sign of a return to first team action, the former French U21 international's days at the club are also looking numbered.

Saints are lacking numbers in central midfield with Quashie suspended, Wise and Prutton out injured and Folly in France on compassionate leave. This may earn youngster Simon Gillett an appearance on the bench after a lively display, especially as it unlikely that Saints will be able to find anyone to bring in on loan before the end of the emergency window, in addition to 17 year old Blackburn academy keeper, Zak Jones.
