Petrescu wants to stay, but only if he can get a game.

"Hello ? Can anyone hear me ? I used to be Dan Petrescu, darling of the Romanian international team an of Chelsea's midfield. Hello?" Yes, it's another quote from our man Dan reminding us that he's still at the club and that although he's miffed about not getting into the side, he would like to stay. As Dan may have learned in the past two or three moans, it makes no difference and his future at the club is none.

On pure skill levels, I would have been picking Dan in our midfield for yonks, well at least I would have been before the arrival of Hod carrier Telfer anyway. But alas, here's a lot more to the situation than that and Dan has seen his career dwindle away to nothing at the club. I'd feel a bit more sympathy if he had joined us instead of going for more money to Bradford and I don't think the club will miss him when he's gone. Dan said:

''I think I will have to consider what to do this summer but I like Southampton, the club and the manager. I have no problem with Mr Strachan.

''But there is no point in me at 34 playing in the reserves. If it means I must move on I will do it reluctantly. I have another year on my contract and if no club comes in for me then I would be happy to stay and help the club in any way I can.

''I believe I am fit and I also believe that I can make a contribution in the Premiership if I am selected.

''I may have to move but I don't want to.''

In another interview Pet Rescue had been in a much happier mood, telling the Echo: "It would be fantastic if I could get back into the team. It's not been the best of seasons for me personally and it's going to take an injury for me to get back in because the team is settled at the moment.

"But I'm very happy at Southampton and want to help the club to safety. I've got another year left on my contract at the end of the season and I will sit down and consider things then."

"I'm training as hard as I can to keep up the match fitness but it's not the same in the reserves.

"It's very hard to motivate yourself when you're not playing first-team football, it's something I'm not used to.

"But I'm happy with the manger and with the club, it's like a family and we all get on well.

"I want to be playing first-team football and want to carry on playing as long as possible but just need that opportunity to get back in the side."
