Dyer straights call for the return of Nathan

Nathan Dyer has been earning rave reviews at Burnley, scoring two goals and delighting the home fans with his pace, enthusiasm and no little skill. Qualities in short supply at St. Mary's at late among the over 17s.

Sent on loan by Harry Redknapp to gain valuable experience and to show he is capable of playing at Championship level, he has done that and more. While he may not be the finished article, Saints fans have been crying out for him to return, if only to answer the question - just who is quicker, Nathan or Theo? And with Burnley ahead of us in the league, it made little sense to continue to do them a favour.

While he may not start against Watford, our one-paced side, Theo apart, would benefit from his introduction as super sub to allow Saints to change the game when we appear incapable of maintaining performance levels for 90 minutes. Certainly Watford will be sick of the sight of him, with Dyer having put in a trademark energetic performance last weekend in Burnley's 4-1 win.

A product of the Saints academy, Dyer will be hoping to join Walcott, Cranie, Best and Blackstock in the Championship for Saints, and to add to his very late substitute appearance earlier in the season against Crewe.

Dyer's recall does of course lead to the question of why Dexter Blackstock has not been recalled from his loan spell at Derby, with the youngster having scored three goals for Derby and Saints struggling to find the net. There were question marks over his fitness when he returned for pre-season, but a series of starts has shown that he is fit and ready to play at this level.

The fact that Saints used no less than five strikers against Norwich to no avail shows that we have yet to find the answer to our striking dilemma. It may lie in Derby.
