Unfortunately James' injury prevented him making that final push into contention which saw caps for Bolton's Ricketts and Aston Villa's Vassell.

On the new season, James told the Daily Echo, "Like anyone I would love to be involved in the England set-up and some people say I would have had a decent chance this year without injury. I don't know about that, but I will just keep my head down and keep working. I enjoyed watching the World Cup, but it was a big disappointment to see England go out."

"I thought Turkey's Hasan Sas was very good as well, but it was Ronaldo who got the Golden Boot.

On the new season, Beattie's preparations are already under way. "We were back last week and the players involved in the World Cup should be back very soon, said the Saints target man. "I'm feeling fit and looking forward to the new season. As long as I stay free from injury I feel like the rest will take care of itself.

"I don't set myself specific targets, but I have confidence in myself and my ability.

"I have had two good back-to-back seasons apart from when I was injured so I just want a free run."
