Anthony Martial told Jan Bednarek he did not deserve red card in record Man Utd win

Anthony Martial told Jan Bednarek he did not deserve to be sent off after the Southampton defender was dismissed for supposedly tripping him in the box late in Manchester United's 9-0 win on Tuesday night.

In a game with no shortage of drama, Alexandre Jankewitz was also red carded fewer than two minutes into his maiden Premier League start for a horrific tackle on Scott McTominay. United did not take long to press home their man advantage after that, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford both netting before the half-hour mark.

Bednarek then put through his own net and Edinson Cavani nodded home to ensure that the hosts went into the break 4-0 up. A two-minute double salvo from Martial and McTominay then made it 6-0 with 20 minutes to play.

The match seemed to be fizzling out after that, only for controversy to strike in the closing stages. With Martial breaking free in the box, Bednarek stepped into his path, and despite pulling out of a challenge the Frenchman went down.

Mike Dean initially awarded a penalty but after a VAR check, he also gave the Saints defender a straight red card. Bednarek was visibly aggrieved at the decision and while walking down the tunnel he could be heard on BT Sport's coverage saying: "It's not a foul. Martial said it's not a foul!"

The subsequent penalty was converted by Bruno Fernandes, with Martial and Daniel James adding further goals to make it 9-0.

The humiliating result equalled the record for the biggest winning margin in Premier League history. It was also the second time that Southampton have shipped nine goals without reply in as many seasons, with Leicester inflicting the same scoreline on them last October.
