Behind Enemy Lines - Leicester

Last updated : 15 August 2003 By Christian Kelly

Check out our previous encounters with Leicester in our head to head section.

Leicester have come through some tough times, trying to get back into the top flight. We ask The Cunning Fox editor, Ivar Tisthammer, about Leicester's chances of staying in the top flight and the state of a club slowly getting back on it's feet.

Despite clinching promotion, it looks as though Matt Jones can't wait to find another club. What's the background behind that ?

He was signed by Peter Taylor for £3 million, earns around £14 000 a week and isn't good enough to be a key player for City, Has been injured for a long time and hasn't been what anyone expected. Not a future man for City. Matt is a good player and I rate him highly but his City life hasn't been easy, not part of any long term plan of Micky Adams

Mickey Adams has been busy in the transfer market this summer with ten signings. How well do you think the team will gel with all the new faces and are you particularly pleased with anyone Adams has brought to the club ?

Les Ferdinand and Keith Gillespie are both quality players, so are Steve Howey, Ricky Scimeca and Ben Thatcher. Lilian Nalis is probably one to look at. I am pleased with all of them since City had a very thin squad last season.

There are still a number of players at the club who were part of the relgation campaign. Do you think the team will have enough talent to avoid the drop this season ?

If they can avoid injuries on key players like Muzzy Izzet, Ian Walker, Matt Elliott, Keith Gillespie and Les Ferdinand. Then it is possibly to avoid the drop, but the signings done isn't high profile and it's a hope for a survival without getting too much injuries.

One positive point about Leicester's problems was the number of promising youngsters who were blooded into the side. How well have they progressed and are there any names you would single out to watch for in future ?

None of the youngsters are certainties in the team, a pity since Tommy Wright, Matt Heath and Jordan Stewart all has great talent. Hopefully they will earn their place in the first team in a short while. Young french defender Nicolas Priet is also a great prospect and hopefully a player City will get a lot out of in the years to come.

What lessons have the club learnt in their time away from the Prmeiership that will help them make a success of the upcoming season ?

Not to use more money that they got, make sensible offers to new players and spend money on new players that has the abillity to do a good job in the Premiership

Finally, how do you think the match against Southampton will go ?

I hope for a win, but a draw looks like the obvious result.

Thanks to Ivar for answering the questions. I'm hoping that Saints will be steady enough to get a 2-0 away win, with one of those fairly late on after catching City on the break.
