1940s

World War II would wipe out league football until the 46/47 season.

In November 1940 a bomb left an 18ft wide crater in the Milton penalty area and the flooding from a cracked culvert left the pitch submerged for a month. Saints had a promising team when the league restarted.

Under new boss Bill Dodgin, Saints pushed for promotion with the likes of Day, Ellerington and Bates in the team. Charlie Wayman would score 73 goals in 3 seasons. Saints would stay in division 2 though, having thrown it away in 48/49 and being denied on the last day of the 49/50 season.
