Dennis Wise and Dave Bassett were in charge at Southampton following Harry Redknapp's overnight departure but they could do nothing to change the Saints' luck as Burnley became the 13th club to hold them to a draw this season.

The management may have been different but the pattern of play and the outcome was all too familiar to the crowd of 21,592, the second lowest of the season at St Mary's.

Southampton had the better of the first half, took the lead from the penalty spot, and then allowed Burnley to come back into the match and deservedly snatch a share of the points.

The departure of Redknapp cast a shadow over the match which was a low-key affair of few chances.

Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen came to his side's rescue in the 36th minute when he blocked a low shot by Djamel Belmadi with his legs but it was only a temporary reprieve.

Two minutes later Rory Delap was clumsily brought down on the edge of the area by Micah Hyde to concede a spot kick. Danny Higginbotham stepped up to beat Jensen with a low shot to the keeper's left.

Burnley had Garreth O'Connor booked for dissent, to be followed in the second half by team-mate Jon Harley and Southampton's pacy Theo Walcott for kicking the ball away.

The Clarets had plenty of possession but only made it count once in the 66th minute with their equaliser. Graham Branch got the better of Delap on the left and centred to the far post where Ade Akinbiyi scored with a header which goalkeeper Antti Niemi parried but could not keep out.

Akinbiyi might have got another near the end when he just failed to reach a centre from Wade Elliott, a Southampton lad returning for the first time to the club he supported as a boy.

Wise sent on substitutes Kenwyne Jones, Ricardo Fuller and Neil McCann but they could make little difference against a well-drilled Burnley defence that gave Jensen plenty of protection.
