Sam Allardyce has brought in several new faces in a bid to stave off relegation to the Nationwide. Despite their quality, there were question mark over both the impact they would make and whether they could settle in quickly enough to make a difference.

Gordon Strachan, on the other hand, has long since settled on the key eleven to steer the Saints ship back up the table. Unfortunately a number of injuries has rarely seen this side together recently. This week it was the turn of the strikers to be plagued with injury. Beattie is still out with an ankle problem, Brett Ormerod and Marians Pahars were both not 100% which left Jo Tessem to go upfront. Pahars started the match but was soon replaced after sustaining a groin injury.

The game itself was a dire affair with few chances of note. Wayne Bridge performed excellently as always and Chris Marsden had an unusually poor showing.

Simon Charlton put in a perfectly weighted cross from the edge of the box, allowing Djorkaeff to glance in a looping header.

Paul Jones was the hero for The Saints when he tipped Djorkaeff's effort over for a Bolton corner.

Just a few minutes later the midfielder was in the thick of the action again but blazed his strike way over Southampton's bar.

Saint's striking jinx, which has seen Kevin Davies and James Beattie absent from play recently, continued when Marian Pahars was forced to limp off with what looked like a groin injury thus allowing former Blackpool striker Brett Ormerod to take part in the game.

Danish midfielder Stig Tofting almost found his name on the scoresheet when his 35-yard free-kick, albeit aided by the strong wind, forced Jones into an excellent save.

Tofting, who made his debut a fotrnight ago during the 1-0 victory over West Ham, again looked menacing in midfield and caused problems for the Saints' defence with his long throws.

Saints weren't without their chances and Ormerod almost got the better of Bergsson before the Icelander recovered excellently to rob the striker of possession.

Wanderers lost left-back Charlton just before the break when he limped off with a leg injury. He was replaced by Bo Hansen and Ricardo Gardner dropped to left-back.

Ten minutes after the re-start Saints had a glorious chanc to take the lead when Fabrice Fernandes found himself inside Wanderers' penalty box.

The Frenchman couldn't keep his volley down and blasted over the bar much to the relief of Bolton's defence who perhaps shouldn't have allowed him the opportunity to have a shot.

Djorkaeff didn't get his chance to hit a debut goal as he was replaced by Southampton old-boy Rod Wallace on 57 minutes.

Ormerod nearly netted his first strike for the Saints on the hour mark but his shot went the wrong-side of Jaaskelainen's right-hand post.

The game had by now slowed down as a spectacle and mistakes were creeping in by both sides. Slack passing and loss of possession were evident.

Jaaskelainen wasn't off the boil and produced a stunning save to deny Fernandes, who this time kept his shot on target.

Ormerod then header just over as Southampton began to pile on the pressure.

England left-back caused havoc and got the better of Bruno Ngotty, who otherwise had an excellent game. The ball found its way to Tessem who couldn't poke it past Jaaskelainen.

At the death, Wallace had a great chance to grab the headlines when he almost guided a shot past Jones. The Saints' defence stood firm and robbed him.

The home side were forced to play the final couple of minutes with 10 men when Delap was sent off for his second bookable offence.

However, the advantage to Bolton was immaterial as the game ended up scoreless earning each side a precious point in the Premiership survival stakes.
