Starting line-up

Miller - 7: What little he had to do, he did well, confidently taking a number of crosses and organising the defence well. Solid, in all senses of the word.

Baird - 9 MOTM: Simply wonderful performance from the born-again Chris Baird both at right back and then when shifted inside to centre back. Made a number of telling interventions and showed good distribution.

Lundekvam - 8: shear class once again from Claus who was simply too good for the Millwall attack. Had a couple of good sights of goal with a header and a deflected piledriver inside the box.

Powell - 5: Went off early injured so no time to make an impression.

Bale - 7: Poor distribution early on was a sign of his nerves, but he grew in confidence as the game went on and was up to the rough and tumble of the Championship despite his tender years. He got the crowd on their feet with a surging run down the left wing reminiscent of another great Saints left back, Wayne Bridge. Definitely much more to come from him.

Dyer - 6: The usual mixture of inexperience and excitement from Nathan and another valuable 90 minutes of action for the youngster. He has a big pre-season ahead of him to add end product and confidence to go with his undoubted potential.

Potter - 7: One of his best performances in a Saints shirt, showing no little skill on the ball, coupled with good distribution and a willingness to put his foot in. Just needs to add more going forward to really make his mark for Saints.

Wright - 7: Worked very hard when moved to right back and put in a number of telling challenges, despite being out of position. A real team player.

Pahars - 6: Some lovely touches from Marian, but still looks shorn of his old pace and didn't make the impact he needed to on the game with his contract fast running out. Just great to see the Latvian wizard on the pitch.

McGoldrick - 5: Unfortunately, a debut to forget, as the youngster had no opportunities to show off his poaching instincts and looked out of his depth. After a great season, hopefully this will just be another step in his stellar development.

Jones - 7: led the line well despite little support from McGoldrick. Could have had a hat-trick creating a number of opportunities for himself and winning and scoring the penalty. A better first touch and a cooler head in front of goal and he could really be a threat.

Substitutes

Brennan - 5: Much better on the flank than in the middle where he was outshone by Potter, although he worked hard out of position.

Fuller - 7: A great reception when he came on and a huge cheer when the comeback kid scored his goal. Looks fitter, more confident and could have scored an earlier goal when clean through.

Rasiak - 6: Didn't have much time to impress, although he worked himself a couple of decent opportunities thanks to his skill on the ball.
