Starting line-up

Davis - 6: Had little to do against his former side, but still managed to get in a poor clearance and a flap in the box to concede the goal. A little harsh given it is the first home goal he has conceded in nearly 400 minutes!

Makin - 7: Solid performance from Makin who got stuck in well with some muscular challenges against the lively Feeney. Offered little in attack as Saints' right hand side again failed to deliver.

Lundekvam - 7: Trademark calmness personified in defence as Claus strolled through the game, tidying up at the back with ease. Was embarrassed for pace on one occasion, but fortunately it was well outside the box.

Baird - 8: Man of the match. A hugely popular first goal for Chris Baird, almost as much of an occasion as Claus knocking one in given the lad is 24 now having come through our academy! Yet another dominant display from Saints' rock in defence who made a series of vital interceptions when Saints came under pressure.

Bale - 8: A very confident and assured display from Gareth Bale playing at times like a left winger and interchanging beautifully with fellow academy prodigy Drew Surman, providing most of Saints' attacking impetus down the left. Went on several mazy dribbles and even had the cheek to try a couple of back heels - not bad for a 17 year old!

Surman - 6: Impressive first half combining perfectly with the rampaging Gareth Bale. Faded badly in the second half giving the ball away too often and being outmuscled as Luton came back into the game. Some lovely touches on the ball, but still needs to offer more of a goal threat to keep his place in the side.

Wright - 6: A largely ineffective display from Wright who was overshadowed by Pele in central midfield. Doesn't offer enough going forward to play in front of Pele and may be a better option away from home once Idiakez returns to fitness. (Updated to 6 by common consensus, clearly others were more impressed than me!)

Pele - 7: Not quite as dominant as against Leeds, but still showed plenty of quality on the ball, breaking up Luton attacks and starting our own with some good switches of play. When Saints came under pressure in the final minutes of the game, Pele showed his instincts as a natural central defender making three clearances in a row from Luton crosses.

Viafara - 5: Disappointing display from the Columbian who looked out of position on the right hand side as again Saints' right hand side failed to fire. Looked nervy in possession returning to some of his bad habits in passing the ball. Was far better in defence and got stuck in with his trademark enthusiasm. At least Saints are no pushovers with Viafara in the side.

Skacel - 6: Pushed up front in a free role to support Rasiak, Skacel worked hard putting in some eye catching tackles and headers as he looked to repay the manager's faith in him. It didn't quite happen for him today, as Burley has still to find how best to get that magic left foot involved in the game.

Rasiak - 8: Some great hold up play up front and no mean skill on the ball as he toyed with the Luton defence threading passes through for others and pumelling the Luton goal with shots. Scored a well taken penalty despite Kiely diving the right way, but should have had at least another, robbed of a goal by a debatable offside decision.

Substitutes

Jones - 7: Talk about an impact substitution - with his first touch Jones launched himself into a header and got not only the ball, but two stunned Luton defenders who were sent sprawling. Gave Luton plenty of problems on the right hand side and then later when switched up front. If only he had the shooting boots to go with his physical attributes, as he wasted two good chances.

Licka - 7: Lively cameo from the Czech who showed some real quality on the ball and should have done better with a header just outside the 6 yard box. Helped Saints retain possession better and was keen to make an impact.
