Starting 11

Bialkowski - 8: a confident performance from the youngster who exuded calm and did what was required of him and more with ease.

Brennan - 6: kept it very simple and did no more, with no risk defending, although he offered little going forward.

Lundekvam - 7: a captain's performance from Claus who along with Higgy kept Saints in the game. Made a brave and vital block at full stretch, putting his body on the line for the cause.

Higginbotham - 8: Another committed and highly effective performance from Danny Higginbotham. He was strong in the air and made a series of vital interventions.

Ostlund - 7: the new signing got stuck in well and looked by far the best of the new signings on show. Strong in the tackle and wanted the ball - so different to his rival for the Swedish right back slot, former Saint Nilsson.

Kosowski - 5: the odd decent touch, but looked a long way short of fitness and more worryingly committment. Substituted at half time.

Oakley - 4: another anonymous performance from Matty Oakley who was way short of his silky best as Saints lost control of midfield.

Potter - 5: equally anonymous after starting brightly and needs more games to show his ability after his on-off time at Liverpool. Failed to get tight on Idiakez.

Surman - 6: tried his hardest but lacked the quality and support from his teammates to make an impact on the game.

Jones - 6: slighly improved first touch and retention of possession than of late, but should have done better when his perseverence saw him through on goal.

Madsen - 5: looked a long way short of fitness and confidence after so long on the sidelines. Made some intelligent runs and clearly knows the striker's art, but we certainly hope that the best is still to come after today.

Substitutes

Dyer - 7: one of the few bright sparks with his willingness to run with the ball. Nearly set up Blackstock after a trademark burst down the line, bust still showed his inexperience in conceding cheap possession.

Blackstock - 6: started brightly and won more than his usual share of headers. Unlucky not to get on the end of two Dyer crosses, but that apart, again suffered through lack of service.

Fuller - 7: little time to make an impact, but he almost did, surging into the box past two defenders and just denied by the bounce of the ball.
