Starting line-up

Davis - 7
: Did what was required of him including an excellent fingertip save to turn Scowcroft's volley onto the bar. Commanded his area far better than at Ipswich, including a brave challenge on the offside Kuqi when clean through.

Wright - 6: Improved display over the poor Ipswich performance, but he's still no right back, looking slow and unsure of what to do in possession. Much better back in central midfield where his leadership qualities helped organise Saints in the second half.

Pele - 8: Again excellent in a hard physical battle with the giant Kuqi. Also found space to show his passing game and skill on the ball. Still the occasional lapse in positioning, but adapting well to the Championship.

Baird - 8: Does he ever have a bad game? Commanding, strong in defence and calmness personified at the back restricting an experienced Palace front line to few clear chances.

Makin - 6: Solid display from Makin who kept it simple at the back and looked good on the ball going forward. Showed a decent turn of speed and made some important interceptions.

Dyer - 7: The classic mixed bag from Nathan, at times electric, at times wasteful. Came in for some treatment from the Palace left side, but kept bouncing back for more. Just needs to start finding the assists and goals.

Viafara - 8: Another great display from Jhon who bossed the midfield, breaking up play and surging forward on the counter. Gets through so much work to allow his colleagues room to play.

Idiakez - 6: Quiet game from Inigo who helped Saints keep our shape, until a tight hamstring forced him off in the second half. Excellent at retaining possession and finding time on the ball, he just needs to get to know his colleagues better to start finding the killer passes.

Skacel - 7: Two assists in an otherwise quiet game showed the value of having him and his left foot in the side. Might have done better when miscueing a header with the net unguarded. Still needs to get into the game more to show his undoubted class.

Jones - 7: Another very early goal from Kenwyne who gave the Palace defence a torrid time, with his aerial presence and speed. Still a mixed bag on the ball and with some wayward flick-ons. Definitely improving and we hope he can now go on a scoring run to repay Burley's faith in him.

Rasiak - 7: Never the most eye-catching, but again delivered the goods finishing well from Rudi Skacel's cross. Give him the service and he will score the goals. Linked up play well, holding the ball up and threading the passes through.

Substitutes

Surman - 7: Looking a more confident and assertive player these days. Helped Saints keep possession and kill off the game and looked a threat going forward.

Ostlund - 7: The crowd greeted Jesus' return like the second coming, as Burley finally gave him his long overdue opportunity at right back. Usual mix of thundering runs and wholehearted challenges. Great to see him back.

Wright-Phillips - 6: Little time to impress, but the popular player did his best, playing on his own up front with Jones at right midfield as Saints switched to 4-5-1. Quick and lively, showed his desire to get on the scoresheet.
