Starting 11

Niemi - 8
: no chance with the goal, better distribution than normal and came for crosses when needed. Usual world class save we've come to expect from the Finn.

Baird - 7: solid defending and coped well with the switch to left back. Didn't offer much going forward.

Kenton - 6: poor marking for the Brighton goal, but worked hard and won several headers against the much bigger McCammon.

Hajto - 7: commanding at the back and looked back to his best, although likewise went missing for the goal.

Cranie - 6: several nervous moments in defence, but played a major part in a slick opening goal.

Dyer - 8: was a bag of tricks and willing to run with the ball time and time again despite the knocks. Set up the second goal, but needs to learn to track back more.

Quashie - 7: strangely subdued, if effective, performance from the Saints captain who may have been struggling with his knee injury. However, he was a settling presence for Saints and was always looking for the ball.

Folly - 5: neat and tidy but went missing too often. Needs to impose himself on the game more to earn the vacant midfield slot next to Quashie.

Belmadi - 7: at times wonderful, at times anonymous. When he played, Saints played and was unlucky not to score from two superb long range strikes.

Best - 4: ineffective performance from the youngster who showed a poor first touch and wayward passing. Failed to take his big chance.

Blackstock - 9: a master display of the poacher's art that Saints have been crying out for all season. Man of the match for his goals alone, but also worked hard to retain possession against some aggressive defending.

Substitutes

Prutton - 6
: played out of position at right back, but worked very hard in defence with little opportunity to impress going forward. Put in one particular crunching tackle in the corner to get Saints and the crowd going.

Ormerod - 7: typical Brett, worked hard and created chances for himself only to fluff them. He did help change the game for Saints, combining well with Dexter Blackstock and helping Saints to retain possession up front.

Mills - 7: solid and reliable when replacing the injured Darren Kenton. Made some important interceptions and looked calm and composed.
