Starting line-up

R. Wright - 7: Swept up well at the back with Saints keeping a high defensive line. Had no real shot to trouble him, but was still a reassuring presence at the back.

J. Wright - 8: Very solid performance from Jermaine who hardly put a foot wrong all game. Was effective in defence making some key tackles and blocks, but also noticably more effective going forward with some decent delivery into the box.

Perry - 7: A brave performance from Perry against the giant Adebola, winning far more than his fair share of headers and putting his body on the line. Lack of pace left him exposed at times, but Bristol failed to take advantage.

Lucketti - 8: Hugely assured debut from the big defender, summed up by two desperate blocks inside the six yard box within a minute. Organised the back line well ensuring that Bristol had little joy in trying to spring the offside trap.

Vignal - 5: No real sign of the marrauding flank play that has provided much of our cutting edge of late, with Bristol putting him under pressure. Went off in the first half with what looked a hamstring injury.

Licka - 8: Our main attacking outlet for much of our counter attacks, Licka gave the Bristol right back a torrid time with his willingness to run with the ball. Created several chances with his delivery into the box from open play and corners and would have scored but for a fantastic save from Basso.

Safri - 7: Tigerish performance from Safri who controled the midfield and allowed Idiakez the space to be the playmaker. Earned himself a yellow card with a vital challenge as Bristol threatened to get clean through. A real team performance.

Idiakez - 7: Much more like it from the talented playmaker who was at the heart of some slick attacking play unlocking the Bristol defence with his passing and dead ball ability. Might have opened the scoring but for an athletic save by Basso. Ran out of steam in the second half, but he had made his mark.

Euell - 7: One goal, one assist from the much maligned Jason Euell. Started poorly giving the ball away four times in the first five minutes through poor first touches and passes, but soon got into the game putting in numerous challenges and getting behind the Bristol defence both down the left flank and in the box.

John - 7: Another vital goal from Stern and how we needed it after failing to convert our numerous chances in the first half. Fair enough most of them were missed by him, but he has an uncanny knack of getting on the end of chances and did what we have failed to do in four games, score. Spent much of the game at walking pace, but still could have had a hat-trick but for a dubious offside flag and inconsistent finishing.

Wright-Phillips - 6: Ran the channels well and harried the Bristol defenders with his pace. Looked certain to score but for two inspired saves from Basso and then completely fluffed his chance when clean through somehow failing to either shoot or cross and letting the ball roll out for a goal kick.

Substitutes

Surman - 6: Disciplined performance from Drew who was asked to fill in at left back with no defender on the bench. Competed well, but had little chance to show his class on the ball outside of some clever chips down the line.

Viafara - 7: Another good substitution from Pearson, with JV coming on at just the right time to replace the tiring Idiakez with Bristol trying to gain the ascendancy in midfield. The Columbian dynamo was a bundle of energy and got stuck in well at the heart of midfield where he is at his most effective.

Pericard - 5: Looked a very limited player on this showing, as with a little more composure and a left foot he could have setup at least two further goals. Might even have scored with a well placed header but for than man again the superb Basso.

Manager

Pearson - 8: Sent his side out fired up from the off as we created numerous chances in the first five minutes alone. Despite another defensive reshuffle we looked well organised with a clear game plan. Made the key decision to play Idiakez and it paid off for him as his class on the ball told, plus the key substitution of when to take him off for the fresh legs of Viafara.

Man of the match

Basso - 9: I don't normally cover opposition players on the extended player ratings, but take my hat off to the current Championship player of the month who kept Bristol in it with save after great save. Apparently he's deciding whether to choose his native Brazil or to qualify for England and we could do a lot worse than have him between the sticks for us.
