Starting line-up

Davis - 7: One of the few bright spots for Saints, Davis dealt with a succession of difficult back passes as best he could and made a great save in the first half. Had no chance with the goal thanks to a cruel deflection from Wright.

Wright - 4: An own goal summed up a poor afternoon's work from Jermaine Wright, with Davis behind him having the shot well covered. Offered nothing going forward, lacking even his usual tidy passing. Lost valuable time at the end toeing a succession of balls into touch as Bristol sought to waste time.

Davies - 7: An unfortunate stumble in the first half apart, he was once again a class apart for Saints, brave, committed and an excellent reader of the game. Showed real desire just to make it onto the pitch after being concussed and disclocating his jaw against Stoke on Tuesday night. Deserves far better than the current shambles around him.

Powell - 6: Another playing through the pain barrier, Darren generally tidied up well at the back, bar the occassional clumsy clearance. Still guilty of a lack of organisation at set pieces.

Ostlund - 5: Put in his trademark effort in another step forward in his comeback from injury, but lacked the quality to make much impact going forward. Failed to link up with Viafara as Saints right hand side proved ineffective.

Viafara - 4: After so many calls for his reintroduction to the side, this was a disappointing performance out on the right from the popular Columbian. Moved inside at times to try and counter Bristol's dominance in central midfield but surrendered what possession he won back looking short of confidence on the ball. Spooned over a couple of decent chances.

Euell - 5: Mixed bag from Jason who did at least get stuck in earning himself a yellow card in the process. Still looks another player short of confidence as he failed to get any rhythm in his passing and too often surrendered possession. There is a decent player somewhere in there - maybe needs a run up front rather than playing out of position at holding midfield?

Idiakez - 5: Subbed in the second half, he provided just about Saints' only moments of quality with a couple of half chances and some lovely turns on the ball. Had a torrid time in central midfield where he was constantly brushed aside when dwelling on the ball.

Surman - 4: A big chance in front of the cameras to show why many rate him so highly, but failed to shine. It wasn't his kind of pitch with his close control hindered on the bobbly pitch as the ball got stuck under his feet. Couldn't beat his man or delivery any quality into the box.

Saganowski - 5: The match turning performance at Palace now looks another false dawn, as the talented Saga failed to impose himself on the game. Didn't help that he had virtually no service whatsoever. Another player the pitch didn't suit.

John - 6: Too often on his own up front, he held the ball up as best he could. Worked himself some decent half-chances, but needed far, far better service.

Subs

Wright-Phillips - 5: Made a couple of lively runs after he came on and at least injected some pace into proceedings, but made little real impact on the outcome of the game with Saints so poor overall.

McGoldrick - 5: Another anonymous late cameo. Needs more of a runout if he's to find his feet in the side.

Hammill - 5: Came on too late to make an impact, but still managed to earn himself a yellow card for a late challenge. Should have been on earlier to at least try and offer something different in attack.
