While the brunt of some criticism at Anfield, Smicer had an excellent Euro 2004 and would be a good addition to the Saints senior squad. However Paul Sturrock has said "That is not a goer." I imagine wages and losing out on European footy would have been just two of the obstacles in getting Smicer to the club.

Cole made an impact with Charlton on loan last season, and would certainly provide useful back up to James Beattie. However, Cole wil undoubtedly want first team football to ensure a good move away from Stamford Bridge. Saints have dismissed this rumour.

After some intial murmerings from fellow MLS players about Beasley's chance to play at a higher level, this rumour has gone quiet. No doubt Saints are monitoring the situation as Beasley would be a definite contender for our first team.

On and on goes the rumour mill on this one, season after season and James Beattie is closer to being a Newcastle player than he ever was.

Paul Sturrock said: "We have not heard anything at all from Newcastle. This has been in the paper so many times that we have nothing more to say on it."

Rupert Lowe said: "Just because people choose to print pure speculation, it does not mean we have to reply to it every time. Nothing has changed since the last time I denied it. We have had no approach - formal or informal - from Newcastle.

There has been some speculation linking Beattie with Charlton, but that's even less likely than the Newcastle rubbish.
