Rumour Mill - Eggen, Tessem, Draper, Milito, Fadiga

Alaves' central defender, Dan Eggen, has been linked with a move to the Saints. The former Celta Vigo player, has fallen down the pecking order, especially with the arrival of Abelardo. Eggen is a Norwegian international but may be a bit old at 32 to be brought in.

Diego Milito is making purring noises at the chance to be going to England. The Argentinean striker, from Racing Club, has been scouted by Terry Cooper and a move is apparently on the cards. Milito said: "It is my dream to play in England. I understand there has been some interest from clubs in England and I would like to go there.

"It is a big challenge for any footballer. But the football is always exciting and competitive and I like that."

Of course, Terry Cooper, scouts a number of players for the club, so we'll have to wait and see on this one. If we do sign him, he will fall firmly into the "one for the future" category that the club like so much. Saints have plenty of options up front so I'm not too optimistic on this one.

Another old rumour which has resurfaced is that of Luciano Figueroa. The Rosario striker is described as the "new Batistuta". He has an Italian passport which is a plus but Saints haven't made a move in all the time this rumour has been doing the rounds, so we'll have to wait and see. Again, is he really any better than our main strikers ? We could really be doing with offloading Davies and possibly Tessem, if he's to be classed only as a striker, before we start adding to the squad.

Speaking of Jo Tessem, he has been linked with a move to Rosenburg.

Rosenborg boss Age Hareide, the Rosenburg manager, said:" I had a talk with Tessem back in the summer. He is a good and versatile player. We stay in touch."

Tessem has been unhappy with the lack of first team games he has been getting. He is an excellent utility player, but is not good enough to get a place up front, and his insistence on being classed as a striker rules him out in other positions, where he would be better suited.

"I know Age well and it's true that we talked in the summer," said Tessem.
"I like him a lot as a ;manager. It was because of Age I went to Molde several years ago.
But I'm under contract with Southampton and have to relate myself to that."

Another Saint who could be on his way is Mark Draper. Gillingham are apparently interested in him with Gillingham player-manager Andy Hessenthaler said "He's a friend of Tommy Johnson and he is someone we would be interested in - if Southampton release him and pay him up.

"He is not fit at this time, but he is of good quality.

"I feel we need to start strengthening the squad again, we need fresh faces to give us a boost."

Draper has 18 months remaining on his, probably lucrative, contract so it's a fair amount of money to throw away just so that Gillingham have a new face in their squad.

Leeds United are reportedly looking to bring in Auxerre's Khalilou Fadiga. The Saints target will, according to the Sunday People, be on his way to Elland Road for £3.5 million. Only last week Fadiga was rated at over £5 million , while Saints are believed to have agreed a £2.5 million deal over the summer.
