Youth policy sways Pekhart

Poortvliet had expressed his wish to bring in a defender and a striker to add valuable competition and depth to the squad and both signings are full of potential and should fit in well with the club's emphasis on youth.

Pekhard, 19, has yet to play a competitive fixture for Tottenham, but is comparatively experienced at international U21 level for the Czech Republic having scored 6 goals in 7 games. He also boasts an impressive record for Spurs' academy and reserves with 19 goals in 20 appearances last season.

He adds valuable height up front at 6'2 and is relatively quick for a player his size. In many ways he is a replacement for Cedric Baseya another quick, tall player full of potential but yet to make his mark in the game.

We should not expect too much too soon. As David McGoldrick has shown prolific form in the reserves can take time to filter through to the first team in the hurly-burly of the Championship.

His signing helped assuage some of the disappointment after the departure of Andrew Davies, coupled as it is with the arrival of Jack Cork from Chelsea who impressed again last night, this time with a first start.

Despite four changes the youngsters showed that they had learnt their lessons against an albeit flat Birmingham side, both holding and extending a well deserved lead against the Championship leaders.

With Saints now looking more solid in defence, the young Czech will hope to improve things at the other end of the field with Saints not yet clinical in front of goal but at least creating chances and scoring goals.

The concern was that the supporting attackers would not deliver sufficient goals to support the sole striker, but encouragingly Holmes, Lallana now have two strikes to relieve some of the goalscoring burden from McGoldrick. Indeed Lallana seems determined to do some kind of Ronaldinho impression by toying with the woodwork, last night hitting post and crossbar after Saturday's encounter with the bar.

With two convincing wins in a row Saints head into Saturday's game against Blackpool in optimistic mood and deserve a big home crowd to see the emergence of a young team full of potential.
