Tottenham make Danny Ings top transfer target

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo has made Southampton striker Danny Ings his top transfer target for the summer window.

Ings has rejected a new contract at St. Mary's Stadium in the hope of sealing a move to a bigger team either this summer or next year, when his current deal expires, and Spurs are one of several sides who have kept an eye on the 28-year-old.

The links to Ings seemed to suggest that Spurs were looking for potential replacements for Harry Kane, who has asked to leave the club this summer, but according to The Telegraph, Nuno actually wants the two to team up.

Nuno has held numerous meetings with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to discuss targets, and the boss has made it clear that he plans to switch to a two-man attack and would therefore like someone to play alongside Kane.

The 3-5-2 was a regular part of Nuno's arsenal at Wolves. During the 2019/20 season, he put together the devastating duo of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez, but the departure of the former and the head injury of the latter saw Nuno abandon his preferred system last season.

It seems as though Nuno plans on bringing that back, or at least turn to a system with two strikers, and he has encouraged Levy to reignite his interest in Ings - which dates back to 2015, when the striker eventually opted to join Liverpool.

Southampton have offered Ings a lucrative four-year deal but he has made it clear that he will not be signing as he wants one more chance to test himself at the highest level, and the belief is that the Saints will cash in now before he can leave for free.

A fee of around £20m is suggested, but whether Spurs will pay that for a soon-to-be 29-year-old with one year left on his contract is another question entirely.

A move to a two-man strike force could leave Spurs needing to sign even more forwards. Kane is their only out-right striker in the squad right now, although wingers Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn have been used in central roles in the past.

It has been confirmed to 90min that Spurs are hopeful of tying Son down to a new contract soon, after which there could be a handful of new arrivals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
