Strachan on Phillips

It enables the Saints boss to build on his success last season, by having another proven goalscorer in the side.

Strachan has long bemoaned the fact that Southampton were far too reliant on James Beattie to find the back of the net.

Up front. Saints only other proven Premiership scorer is Marians Pahars who has missed more than a season through a variety of injuries. With only an unproven and injured Delgado, a yet to fire Brett Ormerod and a midfielder pretending to be a striker in Tessem, Strachan was right to be concerned.

Many look to Saints midfield to get more of the goals. Matt Oakley, always encouraged by Strachan to take more shots always falls back into a holding role for the side. Anders Svensson is often a little to cleaver for the team he's in and often seems out of place in the Saints build up play. Fabrice Fernandes will need to learn a few new tricks if he's to keep ahead of the Premiership defenders next season.

With Kevin Phillips now at the club, we have an all round striker able to work off Beattie or take plenty of chances himself. It will take the pressure off of Beattie and will Phillips is more than capable of linking up with the midfield to get them on the score sheet more often as well.

"I said to the chairman after the FA Cup Final that the dressing room needed someone with stature walking through the door," said Saints boss Strachan with no hint of irony at signing one of the league's smallest strikers.

"James Beattie also needed help. Marian Pahars coming back from injury helps, as does the midfielders scoring goals - so signing a player with stature will help as well. "We want to score more goals and there's no doubt Kevin will get them."
