Strachan clearout continues

Gordon Strachan's squad trimming continues apace with the news that left sided midfielder Ryan Ashford has been freed from the club. Although a promising youth player Ryan has made no impact on the first team squad in the couple of season he has been a professional. He has joined Gibbens, Caceres and Wallace in the Saints departure lounge over the last month.

Gordon Strachan said: "Ryan has been here for a couple of seasons and has not even come close to making the first-team so that tells me it is better for all concerned if he tries his luck elsewhere."

Ryan has gone on trial with Bristol Rovers.

While it's disapointing to see so many youngsters on the way out, Saints have made steps to improve their youth academy even further with the arrival of Prost. So the future's still fairly promising. Strachan's decision to clear out the current crop who won't make it, to give youngsters an early chance of making a good impression is a good policy.
