Solving the midfield mystery

Under Burley the defence has become more solid and better organised, thanks to improvements in training and a settled personnel in Ostlund, Lundekvam, Higginbotham and the improving Brennan.

Up front Rasiak has not only scored goals, but with him in attack Saints look more like scoring with the big Pole adding aerial presence and skill of the ball, reminiscent of the man with the good touch for the big man, Peter Crouch.

It is in midfield though that Saints have continued to struggle. Since the departures of Quashie and Wise, Saints have lacked a leader in midfield and have chopped and changed in personnel thanks to injuries and Burley's attempts to find the winning combination.

This has resulted in our frequently disjoined play and inability to show the dominance in midfield that characterised our early season form. The midfield have also continued to struggle for goals with only Surman's strike against Plymouth in the league in 2006.

This is an area that Burley is keen to address over the summer with the goal-scoring threats of Derby's Idiakez and Hearts' Skacel mooted moves. So what of the current players available?

At left midfield, Saints are well equipped with the ever improving local boy Andrew Surman looking a good prospect and Polish international Kosowski providing experience and a goal threat, although Saints fans have yet to see the best of him.

On right midfield, Dyer has the raw talent and there is no time like this season for him to gain the experience with Saints effectively safe. Saints have lacked the touch of magic that Djamel Belmadi can bring when on form and particularly his ability to retain possession and thread balls through to the front men.

In central midfield Saints have a real find in the energy and ability of Richard Chaplow who will be a serious transfer target come the summer particularly if West Brom are relegated. Alongside him, both Oakley and Wright have looked neat and tidy, but have failed to stamp their mark on the game consistently and this is where Saints have struggled.

Another option is Potter on loan from Liverpool who has looked good in fits and starts but has shown a worrying ability to disappear in games that has seen him lose his place in the starting line-up.

When Kosowski and Belmadi are fit, Saints will have more competition for places and goal threat and it will be interesting to see which side George Burley selects with everyone fit. With all but Chaplow's position up for grabs, it will be down to the players to secure the shirt and earn their place in the line-up next season.
