"We had to win an away game, you can't go through the season without winning one and stay up," Smith said after the game at The Riverside.
"We go into a two-week international break with a huge psychological boost of being out of the bottom three.
"There's plenty of fight left in the bottom four, and Portsmouth and Fulham will be looking over their shoulders."
