Sky's the limit for young team

The statistics make for as grim reading as the performances: a dire 1-0 home defeat to Blackpool that should have been worse; QPR running riot 4-1 against 10-man Saints; Coventry overpowering the youngsters 4-1. Ouch.

Perhaps some media training is in order with the youngsters seemingly freezing like rabbits in front of the glare of the TV cameras?

Saints do go into the game on the back of one of their greatest comebacks in years, the 3-2 win over Preston after being 2-0 down at half-time. This will help the belief of the youngsters who after a reshuffle of personnel and tactics reinforced the footballing cliche that it is indeed a game of two halves.

It hasn't helped that a bug has been running through the squad with strikers Wright-Phillips and Robertson the worst affected. It is hoped that they will recover in time for Saturday.

The emergence of 17-year-old Oscar Gobern with a suberb second half debut adds vital competition to the problem wing slots, although Saints are anxious to keep his flying feet on the ground and may restrict him to the bench after putting him back into the reserves mid-week.

It helps that Bristol City have been in mixed form of late, but Saints are far more inconsistent changing from world-beaters to relegation candidates several times a game.

Things are at least looking more solid at the back. Lloyd James' erratic form looks to have been finally noticed by the management with a half-time substitution and admission of his mixed form from player and club alike.

This should allow the more reliable Jack Cork to bed down at right back alongside the impressive loan signing Alex Pearce and one of Chris Perry or Olly Lancashire with Skacel rehabilitated at left back.

McGoldrick's recent return to goalscoring form has masked the fact that those alongside him need to contribute more with Saints lacking goal threat from the flank. Lallana's return to fitness should help, but Saints need Wright-Phillips, Robertson and Pekhart to start chipping in.

So, it's anyone's guess as to how our young side will perform in front of the cameras. There are signs that players and manager alike are learning their trade in the League and a winning performance in front of the cameras would be a great sign of progress.
