Saints to add to Ricketty attack

I expressed concern at the lack of transfer activity ahead of the Leicester game with Saints short of bodies and consistent quality across the pitch. Up front has been a concern with only Stern John regularly on the scoresheet and how grateful we are that he has been.

Saganowski has been a shadow of his former self and looks a player short of confidence. McGoldrick has yet to show that he do the business in this league and of course the promising Wright-Phillips was rightly omitted from the squad again and faces an uncertain future at the club.

Ricketts is a long way from the player that earned a solitary 45 minutes for England. His career has been in freefall ever since that unexpected cap failing to repeat his eye-catching displays for Bolton at a host of clubs.

Still just 29 he should be in the prime of his career, but has fallen down the leagues playing for Boro, Leeds, Stoke, Cardiff, Burnley, Southend, Preston, Oldham and Walsall since 2003 before being released.

He is of course only on a week's trial for now and if Nigel Pearson can do what other manager's have seemingly failed to do and get the best out of his undoubted talent then he could be an astute free signing.

At 6'2, quick and strong with it, he would offer us something different in attack. The problem is that the season is running out fast and we don't have enough games to get a player fit and confident again and have to hope that somehow he can hit the ground running.
