Saints reject increased offers for Crouch

West Ham are clearly flashing the cash this week having already signed three defenders and are looking to add the proven Premiership goalscorer that every side needs. However, with interest from bigger fish, it is unlikely they will be able to land Crouch, or even that he wants to go to West Ham.

Liverpool’s interest is more concerning with Harry Rednapp admitting that the towering striker is keen on a move: “Let’s be honest, Peter Crouch wants to play for Liverpool. Let’s not kid ourselves. I can understand where he is coming from. He can get eight times what he earns here and play in the Champions League.”

The situation is worryingly reminiscent of the Bridge and Beattie departures, with the hints of player discontent and increasing offers. Although received wisdom is that it is harder to buy a player from a Premiership club than one in the Championship, Saints’ Championship status should make them more determined to hang on to him.

Even if Rednapp receives a sizable chunk of any transfer fee, it would be nearly impossible to attract a suitable replacement to the Championship. As Palace Chairman Simon Jordan rightly said, the potential rewards of getting back into the Premiership outweigh any transfer bid. There are no signs of Andy Johnson leaving Palace or Dean Ashton Norwich and the sale of Crouch would send out all the wrong messages after the loss of Phillips and Camara.

With the departure of 10 players and the 50% reduction in most players’ wages, Saints have largely addressed the shortfall in revenue for this season, particularly with Niemi being touted for a decent money move.

However, it is very difficult to hang onto a player who wants to move, particularly with a World Cup looming and the likes of Liverpool offering serious money. Crouch should be praised for maintaining a dignified silence on the matter and Saints fans will be hoping they can show their appreciation come kick off against Wolves at St. Mary’s.
