Saints fail in loan bid for Glen Johnson

Harry announced his failure to land the England right-back in an interview on BBC Radio Solent: "Jose won't let him come but I would have taken him. He needs his players so there is little chance of Glen coming."

It appears that Harry can't help himself even during the transfer window in looking to do more of his famous wheeling and dealing.

Given the form of our defence, it is questionable where Johnson would fit in. No doubt Saints would benefit from his pace and ability to get behind opposition defences, so Redknapp could have moved converted central defender Hajto inside. Equally, he could have provided a useful option at right midfield in the absence of injured pair Prutton and Belmadi.

Of course such speculation is largely redundant as the move looks unlikely now, if indeed it ever was. Given Saints' lack of cutting edge up front, most Saints fans would rather he focused his efforts on trying to bring in a proven striker on loan. However, given that proven strikers are so valuable to their clubs, this is proving difficult even for Harry.

The Johnson failed move at least shows that Saints are willing to bring in players on loan as long as they are better than what we already have. This will provide Saints fans with hope that Harry might have one more surprise up his sleeve.

A striker is becoming all the more important after Saints' catalogue of missed opportunities has seen us slowly slip down the league. How Saints could do with the return of a fit Marian Pahars. While he managed a reserve run out last week, there are now rumours of a back injury and after so many injuries, he can't be relied upon to make sufficient appearances for Saints to solve our striker dilemma.
