Saints face trip to Hull and back

The Saints squad is looking stretched for the visit to the Kingston Communications stadium. Now you see him, now you don't, Marian Pahars' latest comeback lasted just 45 minutes until he went off with a knee injury, although at least Saints fans were treated to an emotional first goal since April 2004.

Also missing is Claus Lundekvam who has been so impressive of late in central defence. The Saints veteran has broken two ribs and faces four to six weeks on the sidelines.

With Darren Powell only returning to training today and Matthew Mills still out injured, Darren Kenton may even make a rare appearance on the bench. Plus Michael Svensson finds it difficult to play two games in quick succession on his return from injury and looked tired in the final 20 minutes of madness against Leeds.

In midfield, Dennis Wise is out with a thigh injury. At least this should prevent Redknapp from continuing to play Matthew Oakley out of position at right midfield. This should allow for the return of Saints playmaker, Djamel Belmadi who was surprisingly overlooked at the weekend when Saints would have benefited from his ability to retain possession.

Up front the ineffective Fuller and Ormerod should surely make way for the return from world cup qualification of Kenwyne Jones who deserves a chance to start alongside Theo Walcott, if only by default.

Saints need a big performance. A long away trip just two days after the Leeds debacle is a chance for players and management alike to redeem themselves and show just how fit they really are and just how much they want it.

With the league so tight, if results go our way, Saints could even get back into the play-off positions with a win against Hull. However, after a week of setbacks for the club, a draw looks the more likely result despite the relative strengths of the club's squads.

It's time for the players to finally exceed expectations.
