Saints enter vital period as pressure mounts

Saints were expecting a better return from games against Sheffield Wednesday and Crystal Palace than two points after being top of the form tables prior to keeper Crossley's sickening late, late equaliser.

Fortunately for us, results have largely gone our way and we go into the game against Leicester just three points off an automatic promotion place. However, Wolves in 9th are a mere three points behind in the tightest and arguably most exciting league in European football.

Pressure is mounting on George Burley's squad heading into the transfer window, with a serious knee injury to the improving Drew Surman again calling into question the troublesome right midfield position, with Algerian wizard Djamel Belmadi still to regain full fitness.

As it is Saints do have some decent options at right midfield, with forgotten boy/man Nathan Dyer itching to tear down the right wing again, plus potential solutions among central midfielders Viafara and Licka.

David Prutton is another lively option, but it is looking increasingly likely that he will be moved on in the transfer window, with surprisingly League One's high-flyers Notts Forrest in for the former Premiership player.

Many Saints fans are hoping that Prutts can persuade Burley to keep him at the club, as his battling qualities will be a valuable asset as we get to the sharp end of the season and try to stop sitting back and conceding sloppy equalisers.

In central defence Saints squad is looking thin with news that Claus Lundekvam has to have surgery on a third depressed fracture of his cheekbone. Fortunately he will be able to play through the pain barrier in vital fixtures against Leicester and Plymouth with another impression of the Phanton of the Opera in his face mask, meaning he may just miss the one league game.

With Svensson still unfit and Darren Powell slowly returning from his cruciate knee injury, Burley is keen to recruit a central defender on loan, although Saints are likely to miss out on former Hearts defender Pressley who looks set to join Charlton.

The final element of the equation Burley needs to address is the lack of an experienced partner for Rasiak. With the improving Jones set to miss three games through suspension, Saints are left with just Wright-Phillips and the untried McGoldrick, scant resources compared to high-flying Birmingham whose form has much to do with having four quality strikers to call upon.

Again a loan is the most likely option if Burley can finally find the experienced front man he has been seeking for many weeks. If he can and Saints can cut out the silly mistakes, then we may well get the Happy New Year we are wishing for.
