Saints deny rumours of Fowler play

With the rumour mill going into overdrive and reported hotel meetings between Harry Redknapp and Fowler, Chairman Rupert Lowe issued a statement designed to put an end to the rumours: “There is absolutely no truth in it at all. There has been no contact and I have no idea where this has come from.”

While an enjoyable rumour while it lasted, it was always something of a pipe dream. A fit and firing Robbie Fowler still has the ability to make the England squad and is slowly returning to fitness at Manchester City after an injury plagued start to the season.

He has only featured in a solitary substitute appearance against Manchester United this season and will face a battle to regain a starting berth with Andy Cole and Darius Vassell in such good form.

A loan move would help him return to form and fitness and to sign Robbie Fowler would certainly be a statement of intent to the rest of the league and a coup similar to the signing of Paul Merson for Pompey by Harry Redknapp.

With Saints still searching for a striker as the missing piece in the jigsaw, we will no doubt continue to be linked with many more over the coming months.
