Saints confirm takeover talks

While rumours of a takeover from a consortium led by ex-manager Graeme Souness have been doing the rounds for several weeks now, today's announcement came right out of the blue.

It is no secret that the board have been actively seeking investment in line with their promises made at the time of ousting Rupert Lowe. With Souness said to be at more than one Saints came this season, he looked the most likely candidate and at this early stage should not be ruled out.

However, the indications are that a far more spectacular bidder has emerged in the shape of Paul Allen, the world's 19th richest man with a forutne of some $18 billlion, level give or take with a certain Roman Abramovich of Chelsea.

It is still early days, but we do have a comment via the Daily Mail from the classic PR agency 'source close to Paul Allen': "He sees Southampton as a sleeping giant, a family-supported club with traditional values. We see the value in taking the brand global."

If true, this would see Saints join an increasing number of big clubs with wealthy foreign owners, enabling us to compete with the increasingly mega bucks world of the Premiership.

No doubt Saints represent a much cheaper option than a Premiership club, perhaps even going up this season without further initial investment required, allowing access to the massive potential of the Premiership and its global distribution and merchandising. Southampton at least will offer a decent berth for his record breaking yacht!

In truth, if Saints do go up this season without a major cash injection we would really struggle to stay up, particularly as we have not had the consistent form that launched the likes of Reading and Wigan from the Championship into the Premiership.

The club promise further announcements 'in due course'. Exciting stuff and it's difficult to predict what effect it might have on the players with at least two crucial final games coming up. Usually boardroom uncertainity filters its way down onto the pitch, but it's fair to say that Saints have been so inconsistent this season that it would be hard to notice!

Let's hope this marks the start of an exciting new chapter in what has been an incredible rollercoaster few years. Can we really rack up four Chairmen in less than two seasons? It could only be Saints.
