Saints Abroad

Ah, the Saints in Europe. That takes me back to what seemed like a golden age in the club's history. We had a team with a blend of seasoned England international stars mixed with a group of highly promising youngsters.

After the successes of other English clubs in European competition, hopes were high that Saints would do themselves proud.

Yet, my overall memories of it all are of getting knocked out in the opening rounds by Scandinavian sides that no one had ever heard of. Well, we did face Lisbon and Hamburg I suppose but it'scoming a cropper against Norrkoeping that sticks in my mind.

Take a look at Saints forays in Europe in our Saints Abroad section.

Understandably, the club aren't getting too carried away with it all. In a sharp contrast to Fulham, who would prefer to play twenty additional fixtures a season just to get into the UEFA cup, Saints are firmly focused on the league.

"The UEFA Cup is a slightly two-edged sword. You don't have the revenues associated with the Champions League and the early rounds put stress and strain on the club," said Rupert Lowe.

If you get knocked out by one of these "minnows" then the club won't be able to recoup the costs. So it's unlikely we'll be signing any top European stars any time soon, to lead us to European glory.

"Unless it's carefully managed, they can detract from the main business - which is the league," continued Rupert.

"We won't turn it down and everyone will enjoy playing football in different parts of Europe."

"In August, we start again. The sheet is clean and everybody has to get their feet firmly on the ground and compete.

"As we've seen with some clubs who have achieved great European success, the following season they take their eye off the ball and they go down."

Wise words from Rupert. It's far more important that Saints gain another top ten finish and then build some consistency to get into the competition through a healthy league placing.

I'm just hopeful we can do a bit better in the thing than on our previous outings.
