Saga leaves the Best til last

In total contrast to the season before where Ricardo Fuller top scored with 9 goals, one of the success stories of our season was the form of our strikers. The list of strikers' tallies makes for pleasant and impressive reading:

- Rasiak: 21 goals
- Jones: 16 goals
- Wright-Phillips: 11 goals
- Saganowski: 10 goals
- Leon Best: 17 goals (4 for Saints)
- David McGoldrick: 7 goals (including a first ever for Saints)

While David McGoldrick remains one for the future, Leon Best is nearing 21 and with 17 goals behind him understandably wants first team football. He is out of contract this summer and has turned down several improved offers from Saints.

Several clubs are interested in him with Leicester and his hometown club Nottingham Forrest in the hunt for his signature, leaving the prospect of a tribunal ruling on compensation on our academy product.

Despite his run in the side towards the end of the season, he faces a battle to remain in the starting line-up next season.

Firstly, the impressive form of Marek Saganowski means he is the automatic first choice to start next season and his signing should be announced in a couple of days. Troyes have already revealed on their website that Saints have exercised our option to sign him, so all that remains is for Saints to tie-up a couple of loose ends and unveil what will be a popular signing.

Secondly, Best faces a real battle from the hugely improved Kenwyne Jones whose performances have made him a target man to be reckoned with. Kenwyne has all the attributes to be a top Championship striker, bar a calm head in front of goal, signs of which were there towards the end of the season.

He's bigger, quicker and more dangerous in the air than Best, despite the youngster's undoubted predatory instincts and increasingly impressive all round game. Then you have to consider Saints' highest scorer since James Beattie's best ever season in 02/03 (when he notched an eye-catching 23 goals), the poacher himself Gregorz Rasiak.

Yes, Rasiak is one of Saints few remaining bankable assets, particularly with Chris Baird handing in an extremely disappointing transfer request with a number of Premiership clubs circling. It is still by no means certain that Rasiak will be here with the Pole understandably frustrated to be out of the starting line-up in the second half of the season.

Even without Rasiak, Saints still have 5 decent strikers, so you can understand Best's position, even if Burley has shown himself to be a fan.

The final decider for Saints strikers will be the outcome of the takeover saga, with the mystery bidder and terms of the potential deal rumoured to emerge in the next couple of weeks and a certain Paul Allen of Microsoft billions still strongly linked.

As ever for a Saints fan, it's going to be an interesting summer...
