Youssef Rossi is an established Moroccan international who has not been seen at his current club, Dunfermline, for over a month. A fee of a million has been quoted if Saints want to add him to their squad.

"He is just over for a few days and we are having a look at him," Stuart Gray told the official site. He has won more than 60 caps and is very experienced. At 28 he is a good age. But we will watch him closely over the next couple of days and then decide whether to pursue it. However he is certainly not a replacement for Dean."

Dunfermline boss Jimmy Calderwood, less than pleased about the situation said: "We know all about him going down there. Southampton have asked us if it would be okay for him to go there for a few days and we agreed.

"It is not definite that he will sign for them anyway. Southampton have to find out how good he is and he has to show them how good he is and then see what happens.

"They know what the transfer fee involved will be if they like what they see but I don't want to start talking about money just now.

"If they want to pay the money for him and he wants to go there, then that's fine but they know all about the amount that is involved."
