Reserving the Best til last

The reserves have been in good form this season, with some stylish wins and cracking goals. However, Ipswich are proving something of an Achilles Heel for Saints. After last season's defeat of our all-conquering youngsters in the final of the youth cup and the first team's frustrating 2-2 at Portman Road this time it was the reserves turn. Let's hope the first team can put that particular sequence at an end when Ipswich visit St. Mary's.

Despite playing relatively well, Saints were somehow 5-1 down at one point in the game, with Ipswich scoring from virtually every chance while Saints reserves were following the first team's form in front of goal, until they gave the scoreline a more flattering look with two late goals.

The plus point was the return of yet another promising young Saints striker, Leon Best. After playing 45 minutes and scoring for the Under 18s on Saturday, he started this game and took just 11 minutes to get on the scoresheet with a neat header from of all things, a classic Saints long throw.

With Dextor Blackstock a doubt for Saturday after picking up a calf strain on his goalscoring appearance for England U20, Leon Best will be pushing for a place on the bench as Saints continue to seek the answer to their problems in front of goal. Marian Pahars was rested for the reserve game and has enjoyed a prolonged run of first team training, so is no doubt being lined up to start against Hull on Saturday.

The match also saw the first strike in Saints colours for the improving Tejera who scored with a decent finish from the edge of the box. Theo Walcott continued his good form for the reserves with a left-foot finish when put through by that man again Tejera. With Saints struggling to find the net, Redknapp could do worse than try to link up these two once again as they have showed good understanding in the reserves.

Saints coach Stuart Henderson summed up the game: "If anything I think we created more chances tonight and maybe that tells its own story but despite the result there were still some positives.

"That is obviously a first goal for Marcelo Tejera, Theo Walcott took his goal well and I thought he looked menacing all night but I was particularly pleased with Leon Best's contribution... He finished the game strongly as well which was encouraging and it is good to have him back around the place again."
