Redknapp fires broadside at parting Clifford

Earlier in the week Saints presented a united front on the departure of Simon Clifford, with Clifford himself, Woodward and Lowe all stressing that it was a mutual decision and that they were sorry to part.

The one significant absentee was the manager Harry Redknapp who used a press interview to give his own verdict on the controversial Brazilian owner of Garforth Town. He distanced himself from the original appointment saying: 'other people brought him in, other people paid his wages'.

He then questioned just how revolutionary his methods really were: 'we were doing this type of stuff with Ron Greenwood 35 or 40 years ago, so don't let's kid ourselves we have suddenly found a load of geniuses who have changed the face of the game'.

Quite what Clive Woodward made of his comments is another matter. They represent something of a put down given that Clifford was brought in on the recommendation of Woodward and ran the sessions with Clifford.

He couldn't resist a final dig about who really knows best when it comes to football: 'Maybe the managers or Real Madrid and Barcelona and everyone else are all idiots perhaps, maybe Simon is the only man who knows what we should all be doing'.

These are the type of 'off the cuff' remarks that make the PR men sweat and that the media love. Harry is not averse to using the press to get over his point of view and this is a typical example.

The 'who knows best' tone is reminiscent of his comments after the Mansfield loss in the Carling Cup when he played he played the kids to show just how ready they really were for first team football. They lost, although this was as much down to the senior pros on the fringes as the kids, but Redknapp had made his point.

His careful introduction of the likes of Walcott and Cranie into the first team and the successful loans of Blackstock and Dyer have shown that he may well have been right on that count.

Whether he is right on this one, the progress of the first team will tell.
