Redknapp all set for Pompey after day of drama

For all of the carefully worded statements yesterday, all parties made it clear that a move is now firmly on the cards. Aside from motormouth Mandaric, they were careful to avoid making public statements on the case, instead relying on the modern PR tactic of 'sources close to' to do their talking.

Thus, we have learnt that Harry is willing to move and that Saints are not going to stop him, provided Portsmouth will cough up the required compensation for the remaining seven months of Redknapp's contract. Rupert Lowe was reported to be doing what he does best, haggling over money, with Saints wanting over £200k, Pompey offering £100k.

Unfortunately, Saints have the small matter of a football match to play against Burnley as background to the south coast soap opera.

It is still unclear whether or not Redknapp will be on the touchline. He is still the manager of Southampton Football Club and Portsmouth have still yet to gain permission to talk to him. However, he is certain of a rough ride from the crowd with his position virtually untenable after making his intentions clear.

Although Redknapp arrived for training this morning, Dave Bassett was doing the talking, churning out the football clichés like the veteran he is, all the time subtly slipping in his CV to head off a P45.

Indeed, it appears that Saints will look within their own ranks for the next management team at least for the short-term, with Wise and Bassett looking to remain and Clive Woodward gaining a bigger role with the first team.

Woodward distanced himself from reports that he was looking to be the new manager and will welcome the opportunity to get involved in the areas of fitness and player preparation that Redknapp felt was an interference.

The signs are that the situation will finally be resolved on Monday, allowing Saints closure after weeks of managerial uncertainity and the chance to concentrate on matters on the pitch and for the talented squad to show their true potential.
