Rams raid nets Blackstock on loan

Blackstock will become the Rams' seventh loan signing of the season, thanks to the kind of wheeling and dealing that Harry himself would be proud of. Harry likes to send youngsters on the fringes of the first team out on loan to gain valuable league experience and will hope that Dexter returns to Saints full of confidence and goals.

With a reported five Championship sides in for the England U20 striker, Derby are a strange choice. Harry has struggled to get the likes of Robbie Blake in from our Championship rivals, but is prepared to loan one of our most promising players out to a team only four points behind us in the league and one with realistic chances of making the play-offs.

Indeed, you could argue that Saints would be better served giving him a run in the first team at Saints. With Saints struggling in front of goal, Blackstock is at least a natural finisher, but has had few opportunities to impress. During his first team career, including a loan period to Plymouth, he has scored 10 goals in 21 starts.

With Ormerod and Jones struggling for goals and Pahars still struggling for fitness, Blackstock is a viable option as third or even second choice striker. Clearly Harry doesn't see it that way and feels that he needs more first team experience before he can push for a place in the starting line-up.

Either way, this is a big month for the 19 year old. The likes of Jones have returned from successful loans and into the first team, whereas the likes of Griffit have returned from unsuccessful loans into relative obscurity in the reserves.
