Perry in but how long will he last?

While Saints undoubtedly needed more cover at centre back with just Thomas and the injury prone Powell available, signing someone from Luton was unlikely to have the fans jumping with excitement, particularly just after signing an ex-England keeper still in his prime.

At 34, Perry is coming to the end of a career much of which has been spent in the top flight with the likes of Tottenham and Charlton. Last season he reached the play-off final with West Brom, but only Luton picked him up this season.

Despite his age he has played an impressive 44 times this season and should be fitter than a squad player from the Premiership and is of course well used to a relegation battle! With Luton in administration it was a chance to get him off the wage bill and for the player himself to get back into the Championship.

Perry is a versatile defender comfortable at centre back and full back, but will need to settle in quickly, particularly if he is playing in the centre as decent partnerships take time to form.

We just have to hope that the curse of the Saints centre back doesn't strike again and he manages more than Ian Pearce's paltry 90 minutes service.
