Pardew pays tribute to Cherries

Southampton boss Alan Pardew paid tribute to Bournemouth after his side progressed into the second round of the Carling Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 victory. For more than an hour League One title favourites Southampton laboured until Bournemouth-raised Adam Lallana bent a superb right-foot shot beyond the dive of visiting goalkeeper Shwan Jalal. Saints had to wait until four minutes from time when 16-year-old winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain beat Jalal on a break away to give the home team a flattering two-goal advantage. "Bournemouth showed what we have to face this season. They produced a level of football above their normal standard," said Pardew. "We have to realise that when teams come here they all want our scalp because we are favourites to go up. "After losing on Saturday we were disjointed and nervous and our fans were jittery and negative. "There is a long season ahead and we need the help of our supporters because every team is going to make us fight for everything and we have to show we have that extra quality."
