Pahars predicts success

Following on from Rupert Lowe's ambitions for the club in the next few years, Latvian ace Marians Pahars has told the Echo that he too thinks that the Saints can go on to pick up some silverware. Saints top striker said: "I want to win something in my lifetime - that is every player's ambition.

"I know I cannot win anything with my national team. It would be impossible for Latvia to win the World Cup or European Championship.

"So my best hope of winning something is with Southampton, and I know I would enjoy winning something with the club because we have worked so hard.

"We got off to such a difficult start at the beginning of the season, and if we had not begun so badly we would be in the top ten by now. Since Gordon Strachan has come in, the team has improved so much. We are fitter, we are braver and I think we are cleverer.

"We are safe in the league now, but we must look towards next season and we must aim higher. Most of the teams we have played this season have not been better than us.

"We are strong as a team, so we should be looking at the top ten next season, even top seven. Getting into Europe has to be a goal."
