No old Bhoys' network for Niemi

Niemi was originally signed from Hearts, ironically having failed to make the desired impact at Celtic’s old firm rivals Rangers, and had expressed his interest in a move back north. He was philosophical, yet clearly disappointed about the break down of his proposed move.

“It was the fact that Celtic are a massive club who will be in Europe this season coupled with the chance to work with Gordon Strachan and to move back to Scotland, although I do love living here too. If the clubs could have agreed a fee I would have been tempted. It was a close call but that’s life.”

The move stalled when Celtic only offered £1.25, barely half of Saints’ valuation of one of the top keepers in the country. Having now signed Strachan Polish keeper Artur Boruc on loan, Strachan confirmed any potential deal was over: “The Niemi deal is finished now. I admire him greatly. I spoke to Rupert and made an offer but he refused it and I said I won't be back."

Harry expressed his delight that Niemi will remain a Saint, for the time being at least. With Blayney showing good form in Saints’ 2-1 win over Motherwell and Paul Smith waiting in the wings, Saints now have a wealth of goalkeeping talent going into the new season – let’s hope that the defending in front of them ensures we don’t need it!
