Musical chairs at St Mary's

Having lost three players in defence from an area that was a weakness even last season, Burley simply has to get in bodies. Bale, Baird and Cranie, all home grown players, have gone some way to balancing the books, but have left a big gap at the back.

Add Lundekvam's slow recovery from his ankle injury and Powell's three match ban and we are in trouble. Burley is at least optimistic that Vignal will sign later this week on loan, hopefully ahead of the Lazio game.

Although no one bar Wayne Bridge could ever fully replace Gareth Bale, Vignal is at least a talented replacement, if Burley can get the best out of him.

Everyone at the club knows we need a dominant centre back, the concern is that more players will have to be sold to finance this and Vignal's wages.

Viafara has been linked with a move to West Brom and more worryingly the club provisionally accepted a reported £2m bid for top scorer Rasiak, only for the move to fall through due to 'further demands' from Saints.

Hardly a hands off warning and an alarming willingness to sell to a Championship rival, hinting at the club's real expectations for this season. There's little doubt that had it been £2.5m plus from a Premiership club, he wouldn't still be here.

The fact that the club were willing to countenance the sale of Rasiak shows that Burley does not have the funds available to strengthen the squad as he wishes. He has talked of his desire for a centre back, left back and a leader in midfield.

Outside of the youngsters only Licka and Bradley Wright Phillips look on the fringes of a small squad, with Idiakez out injured, but Saints would still need a decent offer for any of them to free up sufficient cash to get in replacements.

As it is, Saints will be hoping to get a Premiership squad player on loan after the first shake up from the initial set of fixtures shows who is likely to be on the sidelines.

Burley has often left it late in the transfer windows - let's hope he can pull a rabbit out of the hat once more.
