While he may have seen the move to Saints from Bournemouth as a chance to move to Premiership football, it became clear early on he would be second choice. The lack of first team games counted against him when it came to new managers, who always opted to bring in their own man.

Neil made comments about how much he would like to return to Bournemouth earlier this season when on a 3 month loan spell there.

Moss' move to Bournemouth depended on the club's financial situation. In the end it was two Bournemouth fans who paid off debts to the PFA which allowed the club to bring Moss in. Chairman Peter Philips said: "I'm delighted that our first signing since the embargo was lifted is someone of Neil's calibre - a player of proven Premiership quality.

"Credit must go to the supporters who generously paid the PFA back the outstanding money, which has put us in a position where we can now strengthen our squad."

On his move Moss said:"I'm delighted to be back at the club and can't wait to help the promotion bid.

"I haven't really played for two and a half years at Southampton, and it's been unsettling.

"But I've no regrets and I'm absolutely delighted to be back here."
