More on Matt's contract

Matthew Le Tissier is going to have to wait and see if he is going to receive a contract extension. While Matt still feels he has much to offer the side, he has hardly played in the last two seasons and could be viewed as a substantial drain on the club's wage bill. Le Tissier said: "I would like to get an extension, but I've got to see how the next few months go. I would love to get another year here. I'm not looking any further than the end of this season, but I'll be finishing my career at Southampton - it's just a question of when."

Rupert Lowe added: "Matt has had some injury problems so far this year and we are not in a position to identify a contract extension right now. It is going to be a matter for him and the club to decide what is in both parties' best long-term interests.

"Hopefully Matt will get fit and contribute later in the season, which culminates in his testimonial, which will be a super event.

"We might even achieve a record gate for that because there won't be segregation between fans.

"Matt has been a tremendous participant in the club's history but we've got to see what he does between now and the end of the season."
