McCann to finally sign for Saints ?

Season after season Southampton have been linked with the midfielder. Now his agent can finally take a break form copying videos of his client's days at Hearts, to blag around to prospective suitors.

You would have to go back to McCann's days at Hearts to see him as a consistently decent player. For Rangers, he has had the odd moment but mainly could teach Oakley a few things about vanishing half way through a game.

Now McCann is not a rubbish player. On his best days, he can be quite tricky and he isn't scared t run at defenders. He can put in decent crosses and links up pretty well with his full back.

However, I never seem to see him on one of those good days. I see him fail to make an impact and drift out of the match.

McCann certainly hasn't fulfilled all of the promise that he showed as a Hearts player. He has had spells of injury and has struggled to make an impact for long periods, which is why he's been linked with a move every year.

In his four and a half years in Glasgow, McCann has made only sixty six starts. He has become more prominent in the side only because Rangers simply can't afford to bring in anyone else.

Gordon Strachan offered £4 million for McCann back when he was Coventry boss. That was at a time when McCann really looked like pushing forward and becoming a quality left sided midfielder.

I'm not so sure that he's that good a player now. While he can do a job for Southampton, there's simply no comparison between a McCann and a De Pedro.

Rupert Lowe must be quite happy that he has a left sided midfielder, and the £1.25 million bid represents the amount of money he was really wanting to spend on De Pedro.

Gordon Strachan will be pleased because he's getting a player he's liked for a while, and for far less than he would have had to have paid before.

I would much rather have seen De Pedro join us. While McCann may well rise to the new challenge of the Premiership and prove to be an excellent signing, I've no doubt that De Pedro already possesses the quality of being a great buy for the club.

A Saints spokesman said: "The decision now rests with McCann although, with no future at Ibrox, he is unlikely to turn down such an appealing escape route.

"Gordon has been tracking the player for a long time and he is hoping to have the transfer concluded in the next day or two.

"The deal suits both parties as it gives Rangers money to fund new signings and gives McCann the opportunity of a fresh challenge in the Premiership."
