Liverpool's Guthrie joins on loan

Guthrie is a former England U19 international who is highly rated at the club, but has yet to make much of a mark at Liverpool given the big names ahead of him. He has made just the two starts, including the infamous 3-6 Carling Cup embarassment at home to Arsenal, where he shared some of the blame for the goals.

He has three Premiership substitute appearances to his name, along with two further Carling Cup substitute appearances. His best position is central midfield, although he is versatile and can play on the flanks. He likes to get stuck in and has shown in Liverpool's reserves that he has an eye for goal.

Similar in many ways it seems to Darren Potter, another Liverpool player blessed or cursed with the 'next Steven Gerrard' tag that is so hard to live up to. Darren Potter was nearly signed by Saints in the summer, but Burley held out for Idiakez and Licka in central midfield.

Is Guthrie's signing an admission that those two haven't quite worked out or just too good an opportunity to miss? Other Championship sides have benefited from signing Premiership youngsters on loan, including Dave Jones and Larsson, so why not Saints?

Burley's official line is the following: "He is an England Under 19 international and a talented player who has been involved with the Liverpool first-team.

"So when it came to our attention that Liverpool were willing to loan him out to a Championship club we felt it was a great opportunity to bring him in, have a look and give him first-team experience. It will freshen things up and give us extra options at a critical stage of the season and he will be in the squad for Monday's game."

Fair enough, although it is a little late in the season to be giving people experience at our expense. Let's hope he can hit the ground running and earn himself a central midfield spot and make the kind of impact that can get us back to our best ahead of some crucial games against the sides around us.

Welcome to the club, Danny.
