The new contract is just reward for his emergence as a key member of the first eleven, having started every game of the season and already chipped in with two goals.

Most importantly it increases Saints' chances of keeping him at the club for at least the medium term with his performances sure to be attracting the Premiership vultures if he continues with his current run of form. If the worst does happen and Saints are forced to sell in years to come then this new contract will help keep his value at a premium and keep the club and its all important academy afloat.

It is worth reflecting on an excellent week for the club, with Premiership duo Cork and Pekhard joining on loan and revenge over Birmingham in the Carling Cup showing the young side are learning how to close games out.

This has offset some of the disappointment at Andrew Davies leaving, but in truth the club had little choice once the high earner indicated his desire to return to the Premiership, even if he may come right back down with Stoke.
